HISTORY

HISTORY

In 1981 Raymond Davidson, while working for another crystal company, realised that the service levels provided to business customers were, at best, poor. He believed that a crystal and glass company, which understood and could meet the needs of the B2B spirits market, could thrive and grow. And so Glencairn Crystal Studio was born.

The company’s initial focus was to design, create and provide crystal decanters and glassware for the whisky industry, with a specialty in complex decoration. To this day the company leads the world in the creation and decoration of decanters and bottles for this market.

There was a brief period where the business supplied the retail trade with a far wider range of goods but the focus has always been on crystal and glassware. From the outset Raymond made the important decision to source all materials from the best possible suppliers.

The company’s philosophy back then, as now, was to provide products made from the best possible materials – that would enhance the customer’s brands and service.

POSITIONING, VISION AND MISSION

We have worked hard to position ourselves in the market as:

‘Pioneering Crystal – Globally.’

This could only be done by producing the best possible quality products and our vision reflect this – we are and will remain,

‘The global leader in the design and creation of innovative, premium, bespoke crystal glasses and containers.’

And if this is what we want to be – then what drives us? What makes Glencairn tick? What is our mission? Simple – we want to

‘Celebrate and enhance the spirit drinking experience – around the world.’

We see it as our job, whether it be through the world famous Glencairn Glass, our high-end decanters and bottles, or even the simplest of engraving jobs, to add value to our customer’s offering. By focusing on this we have grown and thrived as a business delivering fifteen years of consecutive, profitable growth.

WHAT WE DO

As the world experts in the packaging of super premium spirits we help to drive maximum brand value for our customers. Our track record, people and expertise deliver the highest quality products and industry leading innovation. Creating containers for the rarest spirits on the planet, we have produced decanters for the world’s oldest whisky, oldest rum and oldest port – amongst hundreds of other super premium spirits. Our vessels retail in the tens of thousands of pounds (even in the hundreds of thousands) and we are the leading supplier of ultra-premium decanters and bottles to the premium spirit world.

We are also the creators of the Glencairn Glass, the world’s favorite whisky glass. Used by hundreds of distilleries and millions of people around the world the glass is a Queen’s Award winner for Innovation. It has generated a unique range – Mixer, Copita and Gin Goblet – that now form a unique and highly successful range of glassware. Our traditional corporate gifting business continues to thrive, supplying bespoke engraved and printed gifts, trophies and crystal glassware to organizations and individuals globally.

At our core, the family have been supplying the whisky industry with creative, premium, quality glasses and containers for forty years. We can answer the most challenging of questions and tackle the most complex of tasks while ensuring we make our customer’s dealings with us as simple and friendly as possible.

We are proud to work with great whisky and drinks companies, and their brands. And it is our people and knowledge of the industry that is the cornerstone to satisfying our customer’s requirements.

SUSTAINABILITY

We are aware of the need to pay attention to the environmental impact of everything we do, as Paul Davidson, our Managing Director says,

‘As a socially and environmentally responsible family business we are strongly influenced by the families’ children’s views on the environment, as they are the future of both our business and our planet. By shaping our policies and practices around what they believe, we are confident of building a far more sustainable future and, although we don’t have all the answers yet, we’re doing our best to find them.’

And as James Crilly, our Operations Director, points out

“Our ambition is to be 100% reliable on electrical energy over the next five – ten years, whilst looking to increasingly re-use and reduce the energy we’re using in recycling. As a business that makes premium glassware designed to last a lifetime, we believe this is fully achievable and must be at the heart of what we do.”

As we strive to achieve our goals we have already:

Installed an extensive Solar PV and energy storage system and the energy generated by the system will be over and above the required amount for the company to run off and be entirely independent on. Any excess electricity generated from the system will be sent back to the grid and can be repurposed for other local usage. This system has also enabled us to immediately reduce our gas usage by 60%, with the plan for this to rise over eventually leading to removal of gas energy altogether over the next ten years.

Installed a new air conditioning system for the factory floor, thus removing the previous gas heating system, immediately reducing gas usage across the business by 60%, with this figure continually increasing over the next 12 months.

Added electric car charging points in the company car park – meaning that all company cars are now either fully electric or hybrid.

Focussed on day-to-day office functions such as recycling and packaging with the ambition to re-use and reduce, rather than just recycle, removing the use of plastic packaging entirely over the next five years. We work with Viridor – a scheme to collect all cardboard and paper from the site that is taken to be recycled. However, this is also under further review as we look to install an industrial shredding machine, enabling all cardboard waste to be shredded and re-used for packaging purposes, thus making the business self-sufficient within this area, rather than relying on resource-heavy recycling methods.
